Bristol City to take the spoils against Aston Villa

Bristol City host Aston Villa on Friday night at Ashton Gate. Bristol City have struggled in recent weeks after starting the season strongly. The Robins have lost their last two matches being outscored 5-2.

The season hasn’t started out well for Aston Villa after last season’s top six finish. Steve Bruce’s team were beaten promotion playoff finalists last term. The Villains are suffering from a post-final hangover and have collected just 13 points from 27.

Since Aston Villa’s relegation from the Premier League in 2016, they have played Bristol City four times. Aston Villa have won two of those meetings with Bristol City claiming victory in one. The last time the two clubs met, Aston Villa battered Bristol City 5-0. However, the Villains’ win came during one of their best spells of form in 2017-18. It also came at home. In the clubs’ two meetings at Ashton Gate, Bristol City collected four points from six.

Bristol City manager Lee Johnson has eight players suffering from injuries. Frank Fielding, Korey Smith, Bailey Wright, Mo Eisa, Jens Hegeler, Hakeeb Adelakun, Eros Pisano, and Tomas Kalas are all out for Friday night’s match. The earliest any of the injured group will return is October, and Johnson’s squad will be stretched thin in the meantime.

The loss of so many first team players is part of the reason for the Robins’ recent two game losing streak. The good news for Johnson is leading goal scorer Andreas Weiman (five goals) is fit to play against Aston Villa. He has tallied 36 percent of the team’s goals this term. Weiman hasn’t found the back of the net since August 25th against Swansea and desperately needs to get a goal soon to turn around the Robins’ form.

While Lee will be missing a clutch of players, Aston Villa will see two return to the team for Friday night’s game. Keinan Davis and Scott Hogan should be available for Bruce. The striker duo can certainly boast Aston Villa’s lack of goal scoring. Aston Villa have struck the back of the net 15 times so far. Hogan has missed the entire Championship season after featuring 37 times a year ago. The striker played an important role while scoring six goals in the league.

he Villains haven’t won in their last three away games. Bristol City have won their last two matches at home and they will turn it into a third game winning streak on Friday night.
