Copa America 2021 – Brazil Preview

Brazil will fancy their chances of coming through Copa America Group B and playing for the tournament’s trophy once more.

The Seleção are nine-times winners of the Copa America. Manager Tite has a seriously stacked squad of players and Brazil could top Group B after the group stage.

The Seleção are favourites to win the Copa America according to leading sportsbooks. With reports that Copa America 2021 could be moved from Argentina to Chile or the United States, the Brazilians could lift a 10th all-time tournament trophy.

2019 Copa America

Brazil won the 2019 edition of the Copa America by defeating Peru 3-1 in the final. Tite’s team took the title on home soil. The 2019 tournament was slightly different with three groups of four teams rather than two groups of five each.

The Seleção topped Group A with seven points from nine possible before sweeping through the knockout stage to the trophy. Brazil nearly slipped up in the quarterfinals, however.

They needed a 4-3 penalty shootout win to overcome Paraguay. Brazil defeated Argentina 2-0 in the semifinals before winning the competition versus Peru.

Key Players

Brazil are stacked with talent and it is safe to say, Tite has the best squad of any team at the Copa America 2021. The biggest name in the Brazil team is of course, Neymar.

The forward is coming off of a disappointing season at Paris Saint-Germain in which the team once again failed to win the Champions League. Paris Saint-Germain also failed to win the Ligue 1 trophy. Neymar spent large chunks of the season on the sidelines with injuries, positive COVID tests, and suspension.

The Liverpool trio of Alisson Becker, Fabinho, and Roberto Firmino could make up the backbone of the Brazil team. The three players will be vital to Brazil’s chances of winning the trophy. Brazil’s Everton lead the 2019 tournament in goals with three. He is in the provisional squad.

Chances

On paper, Brazil have a far easier group than Argentina do. Brazil’s most difficult match will come on matchday 4 against Colombia.

Before reaching the showdown with Colombia, Brazil will play Venezuela, and Peru. After facing Colombia, Brazil must play Ecuador to finish the group.

If Argentina can finish in the top two of Group A, then the Copa America is set up for a final featuring Brazil and the Argentines. Tite’s team are far stronger than Lionel Scaloni’s Argentines.

They should make the final and possibly lift a 10th Copa America trophy.
