Mourinho Under Pressure at Spurs

Mourinho Under Pressure at Spurs
3062

Going back to the 21st of November 2020 and Tottenham Hotspur were sitting top of the Premier League. They had just recorded their 4th successive Premier League victory and it came at home against Manchester City.

It was a huge statement by Jose Mourinho’s team and they seemed set to challenge for the title this season.

Draws at Chelsea and Crystal Palace plus a home victory over Arsenal in the North London derby were enough to see Spurs remain top of the league for the next four rounds of fixtures.

However, a defeat away at Liverpool on the 16th of December saw them drop into second place and Spurs have been unable to recover.

Fast forward to round 23 of the Premier League season and Spurs were defeated 2-1 at West Ham United. That result sees them down in 9th place at the time of writing, which is a significant drop from where they were earlier in the season. So, what has gone wrong at Tottenham Hotspur over the past few months?

Results have simply not been good enough and following the 3-1 victory at Sheffield United on the 17th of January, Spurs have lost 5 and won one of their 6 Premier League matches. There have been defeats at home against Liverpool and Chelsea plus away losses at Brighton and Hove Albion, Manchester City at West Ham United.

Speaking after the defeat at West Ham on the weekend, when asked about their form, Mourinho said, “I wouldn't say crisis”, before continuing, “I would say a bad, a really bad, run of results. That is obvious. We're losing too many matches.”

Some of the English newspapers have been reporting Mourinho’s job is at risk if result do not pick up quickly. Critics suggest Mourinho’s style of play is at fault and the Portuguese manager has a negative approach to games and that is the problem.

However, Mourinho believes that has nothing to do with the current slump and said, “I think for a long, long time, we have problems in the team that I cannot resolve by myself as a coach.”

This suggests there are issues either within the group of players or behind the scenes at Spurs which is holding back the team on the pitch.

If that is the case, it is interesting it has only come to light now and how are Mourinho’s comments going to go down with the players and owners? Exactly who is Mourinho pointing the finger at when making these comments ?

As things stand, the best hope Spurs have of qualifying for the Champions League next season is by winning the Europa League. If they fail to do so, clubs are sure to come knocking for Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

Spurs cannot afford to lose these players and the chairman will have that in his mind when making managerial decisions.
