Werner would be a good signing for Chelsea
3015

Just has been speculation that the deadline for Timo Werner’s release clause of £49million may go past without a club activating it.

However, according to Sky Sports, Chelsea have agreed on a deal in principle to sign the forward from RB Leipzig. The report suggests the Blues have offered Werner a deal worth £200,000 to move to south west London.

The clause in his Leipzig contract expires on June 15th, which would have allowed the German club to demand a bigger fee for the 24-year-old. Even in a potentially deflated market, it would have left Leipzig in a position of power.

However, the forward and his club have a strong relationship. The forward could have left in the summer as a free agent this summer. Instead, he chose to renew his deal and allow the clause to be included so that Leipzig received a transfer fee.

It always seemed likely that Werner would leave this summer, as there was major interest in him from all over Europe. His form this season, including scoring 25 Bundesliga goals, has only intensified the interest in his services.

The likes of Liverpool and Manchester United have both also shown an interest in signing Werner. The former were supposedly Werner’s preferred destination this summer, but they are not prepared to match his release clause.

Chelsea are in a good financial though, as the Blues were banned from transfers last summer and decided not to splash the cash in the January transfer window. That means that head coach Frank Lampard could have a decent transfer kitty this summer.

Signing a quality player like Werner would certainly be a good start to the Blues strengthening their squad for next season. They are lacking forward options and Werner is highly versatile. With the likes of Willian and Pedro out of contract this summer, the fact that he can play out wide too is a bonus.

However, his ability to put the ball in the back of the net is what could be the biggest plus for the Blues. If they can complete the deal for Werner, they may have pulled off one of the transfer coups of the summer.
