Will PSV Eindhoven come back fighting next season?

Feyenoord shocked the world of football by storming to their first Eredivisie title in 18 years in the 2016/17 season. The meek performance of former champions PSV Eindhoven was equally as surprising.

The club won back-to-back titles in 2014/15 and 2015/16 and seemed to be the most likely side to claim the title heading into the campaign. Yet, they eventually finished in third, five points behind second placed Ajax.

Last season was a huge disappointment for the club and they will undoubtedly feel the consequences this summer, having missed out on a place in the Champions League and the huge payday that comes with it. However, that could prove to be a blessing in disguise for Phillip Cocu’s side, given that they won’t have the stress of playing against the likes of Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich midweek to distracting them from their pursuit of the Eredivisie title.

The club will still have to find funds if they are to close the gap on Ajax and Feyenoord next term. The club failed to bring in any major signings last summer, despite losing the likes of Jeffrey Bruma and Luciano Narsingh. They likely felt that their position at the top was safe, but ended up suffered a massive shock. A similar showing in the transfer market this summer will see PSV slip further down the table.

Andrés Guardado and Hector Moreno have already departed the club, leaving Cocu’s already threadbare squad even shorter of numbers.

The club hope to rectify the problem by agreeing to become the feeder club of one of Europe’s biggest sides, with Chelsea and Bayern Munich reportedly considering their proposition. The deal would allow those sides to loan their young up-and-coming stars to PSV in order to give them valuable first-team experience. That would certainly provide an immediate answer to PSV’s problems, without the need to sell more players to generate transfer funds.

And yet, even that might not be enough. Ajax and Feyenoord are likely to strengthen further this summer and their place as the Netherlands’ top two sides will make them far more attractive options to potential transfers.

However, there is some hope for PSV, as a number of top European clubs continue to express their interest in the two clubs’ star players. Ajax have already lost club captain Davy Klaassen, as well as manager Peter Bosz, while Feyenoord’s Dirk Kuyt has called time on his career. Cocu will he hoping that those big exits continue. If not, he might have to settle for third once again next season.
