    Poor Liverpool slump at Leicester

2017 has been a dreadful year for Liverpool and a season which promised a great deal in the latter stages of 2016 is in danger of becoming a shambles.  With the club, out of both domestic cup competitions, the only thing Jurgen Klopp’s team must fight for is the Premier League and they are in real danger of missing out on the top four.  Not only is there own form a concern but that of Manchester United must be a worry.

Liverpool travelled to Leicester with the focus very much on their hosts and had the opportunity to place pressure on the teams who didn’t play at the weekend, namely Arsenal and Manchester United.  However, while the Leicester plays have their own questions to answer as to why they turned it on in this game, having failed to do the same earlier in the season, Liverpool have their own problems to address.

The victory over Tottenham Hotspur two weeks ago, which was their first in the Premier League this year, was supposed to be the catalyst for Liverpool to push on for the remainder of the season and secure a top four place.  However, trends show Liverpool struggle against teams in the bottom half of the table and this proved to be the case at the King Power Stadium on Monday night, as Leicester ran riot against them.

The 3-1 defeat means it is now just one win in seven Premier League games and that’s simply not good enough for a team who were being touted as potential Premier League champions earlier in the season.  Liverpool have now lost to Leicester, Bournemouth, Burnley, Hull and Swansea this season and there is clearly a problem when it comes to playing teams in the bottom half of the league table.

Having had a 16-day break, Liverpool were expected to come out looking fresh, full of energy and ideas but instead they were rusty, struggling to compete for second balls.  The defence looked very unstable, with Lucas playing centrally and the midfield was poor, lacking any determination and desire.  Furthermore, it looked as though Liverpool didn’t have a plan of how they were going to go about the match, both defensively and offensively.  This led to criticism from former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher, who highlighted how certain players were being played out of position, such as Lucas and James Milner, who has been playing left-back all season but is a midfield player.

While Carragher spoke about Liverpool’s problems in terms of their manager, Klopp, who was talking after the match, said "They (Leicester) were ready, they had their set pieces and throw-ins ready and we gave throw-ins away like we hadn't spoken about them.”

This suggests the players failed to carry out the manager’s instructions and if that is the case, perhaps the problems run a little deeper than first thought.  If Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League this season, it will be a huge disappointment and Klopp has a lot of work on his hands to get things right over the next few weeks, starting with the match against Arsenal on Saturday.
