Can Celtic’s Scottish Premiership dominance ever be broken?

Can Celtic’s Scottish Premiership dominance ever be broken?

Aberdeen, Hearts of Midlothian and Hibernian sit joint third in the list of most Scottish top flight title victories, having each won the competition four times since Scottish football began back in 1890.

Just eight other teams have won the title in those 126 years of play - Dumbarton twice, Motherwell once, Dundee once, Dundee United once and Third Lanark once. The other 101 season titles have been claimed by just two other sides - Celtic, who come second with 47 titles to their name, and Rangers, who are Scottish football’s most successful side with a total of 54 titles.

For it’s entire history, Scottish football has always been a battle between those two sides, who have each had their own spells of dominance.

Celtic were in control in the early 1900s under legendary manager Willie Maley, who won six consecutive titles between 1904/05 and 1909/10, as they were in the 1960s when they won nine in a row under Jock Stein. Rangers matched that record of nine back-to-back titles in the late 80s and 90s.

Both teams have had their times, but the other has always found a way to regain control and retake their place at the top of Scottish football. But, with all that has gone on at Rangers in recent years, have Celtic moved into a position that will make them untouchable?

The Glasgow based club are now on track to win their sixth consecutive Scottish Premiership title. A look at the current table proves just how far ahead of their opponents they are, having amassed 70 points from a possible 72. Their closest challengers, Aberdeen, have just 43 points. They are on track to produce one of their greatest ever seasons and look likely to be in control for some time.

Despite coming back from the brink of extinction, Rangers find themselves in a crisis once again after manager Mark Warburton and assistant manager David Weir walked out on the club earlier this week. Prior to his departure, Weir insisted that it would take a huge spending spree, upwards of £100 million, to take Rangers level with Celtic. Even if they were able to find that kind of money, the club would be reluctant to invest so heavily, given the financial troubles that they found themselves in back in 2012.

Meanwhile, Celtic continue to grow stronger. While the revenue on offer to Scottish Premiership clubs is small, Celtic earn large sums of money from their Champions League participation each season. With just one Champions League spot available, Celtic will continue to earn far larger amounts than their rivals year in, year out, further strengthening their position at the summit of Scottish football.

As a result, Celtic are likely to dominate for some time. In fact, they could even top their own record of nine consecutive trophies. However, their period of dominance can’t go on forever - the mighty always fall. Rangers just need to be ready to pounce when they do.
