Monaco a Danger for Manchester City

When the draw was made for the Champions League Round of 16 in December, Manchester City were fearing the worst. The draw has often been unkind to them and having finished second in their group, Pep Guardiola’s team were bracing themselves to face Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund or Juventus.  However, when the draw was completed and Monaco were pulled out of the hat, everyone at the Etihad breathed a sigh of relief. Monaco was the best draw they could have hoped for, or so it seemed at the time.

If the tie was to be played right now, the outcome may be a lot closer than many people first predicted. Monaco are currently flying in Ligue 1 and went top of the table at the weekend, thanks to a 4-0 victory over struggling Lorient.  Monaco dictated the play and restricted Lorient to just one half-chance during the 90 minutes, which highlights just how much control they had over the match.  However, it was the performance last weekend, in the stunning win at Marseille, which should have Manchester City fans concerned.

The 4-1 win at the Stade Velodrome was all about Monaco’s brilliant counter-attack, an aspect of play which Manchester City have struggled to cope with this season. In truth, the number of goals scored by Monaco in the match could have been higher, as their finishing was not at its clinical best. That being said, Monaco have been scoring goals for fun this season and that will be a concern for a Manchester City defence which has struggled badly at times during the 2016/17 campaign.

Following the 4-0 win over Lorient, Monaco have scored more league goals than any other team in Europe’s top five leagues.  It was the ninth-time Monaco have scored 4 goals in a game this season and they now have 64 goals in 21 league games, an average of just over 3 goals per game.  Their overall total for the season reads 90 goals in 34 games, a tremendous average of 2.6 goals per game and they have a goal difference of 3.05 per Ligue 1 match this season.

Manchester City fans will take one look at Monaco’s attacking players, see the name of Radamel Falcao and wonder what all the fuss is about. This is a man who struggled badly to score goals in the Premier League but playing in mainland Europe, this is a player who is proven to be prolific and has scored plenty of goals this season. The Colombian striker scored 5 goals in a combined total of 36 games for Manchester United and Chelsea but this season, has a total of 17 goals in 22 games, a fantastic record. Falcao will be licking his lips at the thought of playing against the Manchester City defence.

Monaco play both Paris Saint-Germain and Nice in Ligue 1 before facing Manchester City in the Champions League. If they can continue their great form and win those matches, they will be in a hugely confident mood ahead of the Champions League meeting with Manchester City.
