    What’s Going Wrong at Barcelona?

Having played 17 games in La Liga this season, Barcelona find themselves in third place, 5 points off the leaders Real Madrid, who have a game in hand.  If Real Madrid win their game in hand, which seems extremely likely given their form this season, the lead will be 8 points and this will be very difficult to overturn, especially when the Champions League resumes in mid-February.

Essentially, Barcelona are relying on second placed Sevilla, to do them a favour and defeat Real Madrid next weekend and keep them within touching distance of Zinedine Zidane’s team.

So, what has happened to Barcelona?  Having defeated Osasuna and Espanyol in La Liga before the winter break, it appeared they may be about to turn a corner this season.  However, since the domestic season resumed on January 5th, Luis Enrique’s team have failed to win a match.  Firstly, they went down 2-1 to Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey and were then held 1-1 by Villarreal in La Liga.  The latter result did not come as such a shock, which must see credit given to the Yellow Submarine but for Barcelona, it is a game they should be winning and the fact the draw did not come as a shock, shows exactly where they are as a team at this moment in time.

Lionel Messi has missed games throughout the season due to injury and if it was the Argentine’s late free-kick at El Madrigal on the weekend, Barcelona would have lost the match.  Messi was injured for the defeats to Celta Vigo and Alaves and the draws against Malaga and Atletico Madrid.

Barcelona have also had to do without Andres Iniesta, Jordi Alba and Gerard Pique at different stages this season due to injury. These are four players who are impossible to replace.  Without top quality players alongside him, Sergio Busquets has struggled and become more isolated as his midfield partners have drifted further wide.  Enrique has also adopted a more direct style of play, which has seen Busquets become less involved in starting attacking moves.

The goals have dried up for Neymar this season. That’s not to say he is lacking in desire, it was clear in his performance against Villarreal but the finishing touch deserted him.  The Brazilian forward has 4 goals and 6 assists to his name in La Liga this season.  Last season, he finished with 24 goal and 12 assists, a total which he is very unlikely to come close to this season. That’s proved to be a big miss for Barcelona.

Then there are the players who were brought in over the summer transfer window for a total of 120 million Euro.  Not one of the six players have forced themselves into the preferred starting XI at the Camp Nou, with perhaps Andre Gomes and Paco Alcacer being the biggest disappointments.  The loss of Dani Alves at right-back has also proved costly, with Sergi Roberto struggling at times and opposition managers will be highlighting this area as a potential weakness.

There is a sense Barcelona are reaching the end of the Luis Enrique era.  Given the way this season is developing, perhaps the best thing the club could do is bring in a new manager, with fresh ideas and new impetus.
