Belgium road to Euro 2016 glory

Belgium road to Euro 2016 glory

Belgium headed into Euro 2016 as the highest ranking team in the competition, ranked as the second best team in the world rankings.

The Red Devils were a group of highly-rated individuals, but there were questions marks about them as a team and the ability of head coach Marc Wilmots to bring the best out of his players.

Those question marks increased following Belgium’s opening game 2-0 defeat against tournament-hardened Italy. The defeat was a shock to the system and was maybe what the talented, but naïve Belgians needed.

The second group game against Republic of Ireland was goalless at half-time and questions were once again being asked of Wilmots and his team. Some of those questions were answered empathically in the 25 minutes that followed, as Romelu Lukaku grabbed a brace and Alex Witsel headed home.

The second half performance showed just what the Red Devils could do, as did their display against Sweden, as although they only won 1-0 Swedish ‘keeper Andreas Isaksson pulled-off a number of saves to deny them.

Belgium have ended up in what is acknowledged as the easiest side of the draw with a plumb last-16 tie against Hungary, who although no pushovers are not European giants either.

In Belgium’s side of the draw are the likes of Croatia, Portugal, Poland, Wales and Switzerland, all good teams, but no big European nations that Belgium would, or should fear.

If Wilmots can indeed drag the best out of this talented group of players, then they have the potential to go to the latter stages of the competition.

However, the Red Devils must play like a team and not a group of individuals or they could well face a rude awakening against a highly-impressive Hungary side in the last-16.
