Cristiano Ronaldo frustrated at Euro 2016

Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal are experiencing a frustrating Euro 2016 campaign so far. An opening game 1-1 draw with Iceland was followed-up by a goalless draw against Austria on Saturday night.

Ronaldo has not looked like his usually deadly self. The 31-year-old has missed some golden opportunities in the two games so far, including a late penalty against Austria which he smashed against the bar.

A lot of the chances the forward has missed would have been put away in a Real Madrid shirt. Ronaldo has been highly prolific for the last half a decade for Los Blancos. For some reason he has not always been able to transfer his form to the international stage.

He usually thrives when he is considered the main man for his team in Madrid, but he has teammates who can back-up him up at Real Madrid, who can produce when he is having an off-day. For his national side it does not seem like he has that.

Fenerbahce winger Nani is an example of one of those teammates that has flattered to deceive for his country. It seems the word ‘mercurial’ was invented to describe Ricardo Quaresma who for so long promised so much, but has delivered so little in his club or international career.

Ronaldo has the personality and ability to shoulder the burden of the Portuguese attack, but at times he is trying to do everything on his own, maybe believing that his teammates are not quite up to the job.

Portugal now faces a must-not-lose final group game against Hungary. A win is a must to ensure qualification or Ronaldo and co will be making an early exit from the competition.
