Marcus Rashford way down the pecking order for England

Marcus Rashford way down the pecking order for England

According to newspaper reports, Manchester United youngster Marcus Rashford will make his debut for England on Friday against Australia. The 18-year-old suffered a slight injury scare in the FA Cup final on Saturday, but is believed to have now followed recovered from that knock.

He is in England’s provisional 26-man squad for this summer’s European Championship. However he is one of the favourites to miss out on the tournament, as the squad must be cut down to 23 players prior to the start of the finals in France.

Rashford has enjoyed a meteoric rise this season, breaking into the United team on a regular basis and scoring some vital goals for the Red Devils. He was one of the more surprising names in the 26 man squad though for the tournament, as it seemed likely that the Euro’s may have come too soon for him.

However, he is one of five strikers to be called-up and is in esteemed company. Rashford is competing with club mate Wayne Rooney, Tottenham striker Harry Kane and Leicester star Jamie Vardy for a place in the squad, not to mention Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge who is regarded as many as England’s most natural goal scorer.

Rashford is an exciting young talent, but it would be hard to argue that he deserves his place in the England squad ahead of any of the other four forwards. The Three Lions are unlikely to need five forwards, so it seems logical that Rashford is left out of the squad.

It would take something extraordinary to happen for Rashford to get near the Three Lions starting line-up in France, as he is just too far down the pecking order to see much game time.
