Euro 2020 Squad Guide and Analysis: Spain

Euro 2020 Squad Guide and Analysis: Spain
2306

After winning back-to-back European Championships in 2008 and 2012, Spain only managed to reach the last 16 at both Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup. Is the current crop of Spanish stars good enough challenge at Euro 2020?

• Manager: Luis Enrique

• Current FIFA World Ranking: 6th

• Best European Championship finish: Champions (1964, 2008, 2012)

La Roja head into Euro 2020 sitting sixth in the FIFA World Rankings, behind Belgium, France, England and Portugal. Let’s assess what the current Spain squad is capable of.

• Spain’s Euro 2020 Squad

Goalkeepers: David de Gea (Manchester United), Unai Simon (Athletic), Robert Sanchez (Brighton & Hove Albion).

Defenders: Jose Gaya (Valencia), Jordi Alba (Barcelona), Pau Torres (Villarreal), Aymeric Laporte (Manchester City), Eric Garcia (Barcelona), Diego Llorente (Leeds United), Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea).

Midfielders: Thiago Alcantara (Liverpool), Sergio Busquets (Barcelona), Koke (Atletico), Marcos Llorente (Atletico), Dani Olmo (Leipzig), Rodri (Manchester City), Fabian Ruiz (Napoli), Pablo Sarabia (Paris), Ferran Torres (Manchester City), Adama Traore (Wolves).

Forwards: Alvaro Morata (Juventus), Gerard Moreno (Villarreal), Mikel Oyarzabal (Real Sociedad), Pedri (Barcelona).

• Who Will Spain Face in Group E?

Spain are expected to qualify for the knockout phase without any real problems, having been drawn alongside Poland, Slovakia and Sweden in Group E.

After facing Sweden in Seville on June 14, Spain come up against Poland on June 19, before taking on Slovakia on June 23.

• Spain’s Star Player

Sergio Busquets: One of the only survivors from Spain’s 2012 European Championship triumph, Busquets knows exactly what it takes to go all the way and lift the trophy.

Believe it or not – the Barcelona midfielder is still just 32. If it feels like he’s been around forever, that’s because he has 123 international caps to his name!

• How Far Can Spain Go?

It is no secret that Spain are not what they once were. Sure, their squad is packed with household names. But there are definitely stronger sides in the tournament.

Enrique’s men shouldn’t struggle to get out of their group, before navigating the Round of 16. But after that, they could find it difficult to compete with the bookmakers’ favourites.
