Following a questionable draw with Scotland in the lead-up to the tournament, question marks have been raised over Netherlands’s credentials. Can they prove the doubters wrong at Euro 2020?

• Best European Championship finish: Champions (1988)

As well as going all the way in 1988, Netherlands have recorded four third-place finishes at European Championships (1976, 1992, 2000, 2004).

Of course, the glory days are in the past. But let’s assess the current Netherlands squad and see how far they can go this time around.

Goalkeepers: Marco Bizot (AZ), Tim Krul (Norwich), Maarten Stekelenburg (Ajax).

• Who Will Netherlands Face in Group C?

Netherlands have been drawn in a favourable group and are expected to qualify for the knockout phase with ease. First up, they come up against Ukraine in Amsterdam on June 13.

Frank de Boer’s men then face a potentially tricky test against Austria on June 17, before doing battle with tournament-newcomers North Macedonia on June 21.

• Netherlands’s Star Player

Matthijs de Ligt: With Georginio Wijnaldum in midfield and Memphis Depay in attack, Netherlands are strong in every department. But it could be argued that without Matthijs de Ligt, de Boer’s side wouldn’t be the same.

The Juventus centre-back is still just 21 years of age. However, he already has 27 international caps under his belt, along with numerous domestic trophies.

• How Far Can Netherlands Go?

Unfortunately, Netherlands aren’t what they used to be. The Dutch should qualify for the knockout phase without any real problems, but a last-eight finish is the best they can probably hope for.
