Kevin De Bruyne’s name has surprisingly appeared in the Liverpool rumour mill this week, with reports suggesting the Reds are monitoring the Belgian’s availability ahead of the summer window.

The Manchester City star is approaching the end of his contract and, at 33, and will soon be a free agent. While Liverpool insiders have downplayed the links, speculation continues to grow.

De Bruyne has been one of the Premier League’s most influential midfielders over the last decade. His vision, passing range and ability to dictate play have made him a standout at the Etihad.

But the idea of him switching Manchester blue for Merseyside red seems far-fetched on several levels.

First, there’s the issue of age. De Bruyne will turn 34 in June, and Liverpool have historically avoided signing players past their physical peak, especially under a model focused on younger talent with resale value.

The club’s recruitment policy has rarely revolved around experienced stars commanding massive wages – outside of players already at the club like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

That brings us to another sticking point: his reported salary of £400,000 per week. Liverpool are not known for breaking their wage structure, and such a figure would place De Bruyne well beyond the current top earners at Anfield.

Even if he were willing to accept a pay cut, it's doubtful the club would justify the cost for a player in the twilight of his career.

De Bruyne's 2024 campaign has been far from his best, plagued by fitness concerns and limited minutes. He has made just 25 Premier League appearances, registering four goals and seven assists.

Injuries, particularly a lingering hamstring problem, have hampered his rhythm and output in recent seasons.

Despite the drop in goals, the Belgian still has a knack for creating chances. He has delivered seven assists so far and remains a dangerous weapon in the final third. If he reaches double-digit assists again, it would mark the third consecutive season of hitting that benchmark.

However, the question remains: do Liverpool need De Bruyne? The simple answer is no. With their midfield already built, the Reds appear content in that area of the pitch.

Arne Slot has other priorities in mind. Full-backs are the most pressing need, particularly with Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving and Andrew Robertson nearing the end of his career. A centre-back and a No. 9 are also believed to be high up the transfer list.

So where does De Bruyne fit into all this? Realistically, he probably doesn’t. His profile doesn’t align with Liverpool’s current transfer strategy, and his position isn’t an area of need.

A move to the United States remains a more plausible scenario, with MLS side Chicago Fire interested.

The Saudi Pro League could also present a lucrative offer, despite its growing caution with ageing players. Either way, Anfield seems an unlikely destination for one of City's all-time greats.
