Underdogs That Have Impressed at Euro 2024 So Far
    06/21/2024 1182

We may only be midway through the group stage, but the European Championship has already produced plenty of shock results and upsets.

While Forebet is renowned for generating successful mathematics-based football predictions, we also enjoy celebrating the smaller teams that upset the odds.

Here are four underdogs that have impressed at Euro 2024 so far:

    Slovakia

When Slovakia were drawn in Group E alongside Belgium, Ukraine and Romania, many believed that Francesco Calzona’s side would struggle to reach the knockout phase.

However, the Falcons kicked off their campaign with a memorable 1-0 victory over Belgium, despite conceding 61% possession and 16 shots.

Following Ivan Schranz’s seventh-minute goal, the Slovakians produced a resilient defensive performance to keep the Belgians at bay.

All of a sudden, Slovakia find themselves joint top of Group B, meaning a point from their next two matches should be enough to send them into the last 16.

    Albania

Albania announced themselves at Euro 2024 by recording the earliest goal in the tournament’s history, with Nedim Bajrami scoring after just 23 seconds against Italy.

Although the minnows went on to lose that game 2-1, they showed European football fans what they are capable of.

In their second game, Albania took another early lead against Croatia, only to conceded two quick-fire goals in the second half.

However, Sylvinho’s men exhibited their never-say-die attitude once again, with Klaus Gjasula netting a 95th-minute equaliser to earn his nation a precious point.

    Slovenia

Many expected Denmark to make light work of Slovenia on Matchday 1, but the underdogs managed to secure a 1-1 draw thanks to Erik Janza’s 77th-minute equaliser.

Despite the Danes racking up 68% possession and 16 shots, the Slovenians defended soundly and were eventually rewarded for their efforts.

On Thursday, Slovenia maintained their unbeaten record at Euro 2024 with another 1-1 draw, although they almost claimed all three points against Serbia.

Zan Karnicnik gave his side the lead in the 69th minute, but Luka Jovic equalised for Serbia in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

    Romania

Romania produced one of the standout results of Matchday 1, claiming a memorable 3-0 victory over Ukraine at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena.

Nicolae Stanciu kicked things off with a goal-of-the-tournament contender, bending in a sensational strike from outside the box.

After the break, Razvan Marin netted another long-range goal before Denis Dragus completed the scoring four minutes later.

Remarkably, Romania finished the game with only 28% possession and five shots on target, but they managed to secure a famous victory.
