Poland sit third in League A Group 1 of the Nations League, level on points with the Netherlands after two games. Italy top the group with 4pts followed by the Netherlands and Poland who have won one and lost one of their opening two matches. Bosnia & Herzegovina occupy last place with 1pt to their name.
Sunday’s hosts will be expecting a tough match against the Italians as they have only won one of the duo’s last six encounters.
Italy are currently three games unbeaten against the Poles, securing two wins and one draw. Those two wins both arrived in Poland’s own backyard, where they have failed to beat Italy in their last three matches. You have to go all the way back to 1985 for a Poland home win over the Italians.
The majority of the pair’s recent encounters have been closely fought, with the exception of Italy’s 3-0 World Cup qualifier win in 1997. Four of the two nations’ last six meetings have produced under 2.5 goals, including their last three head to heads.
Italy have kept clean sheets in their last three trips to Poland, securing a 0-0 draw, followed by a 2-0 and a 1-0 win. Two of Poland’s last four home games have produced under 2.5 goals, as have both of Italy’s two Nations League games so far.
Poland are without Maciej Rybus, Artur Jedrzejczyk, and Piotr Zielinski this weekend, but are able to call upon their talisman Robert Lewandowski. Grzegorz Krychowiak and Kamil Grosicki provide experience in midfield while at the back, Kamil Glik is the only over 30 to be selected. Both Fabianski and Szczesny have also been selected between the sticks.
Italy arrive on Sunday fresh on the back of a 6-0 win over Moldova and will be aiming to make it 18 matches without defeat when they face Poland. Gli Azzurri have won 14 of those 18 internationals and look to have returned to somewhere near their best.
Eight of those 14 victories were by a 1 or 2-goal margin, and Forebet is expecting another narrow win for the Italians on Sunday.
The aging Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci remain at the heart of the Italy defence, while Verratti pulls the strings in midfield. Immobile and Belotti should provide the goals in this Italy side, while young Moise Kean is a threat from the bench. Insigne and Bernardeschi are the notable absentees from the squad.
Forebet predicts a close game between these two countries but backs a slender win for the visitors. Italy have a good record of clean sheets in Poland and could get another this weekend if they can keep Lewandowsky away from the ball.
