Qualifying for the 2020 European Championship continues this week and on Tuesday 11th June we have a meeting between Belgium and Scotland at the King Baudouin Stadium, Brussels.

This is the fourth round of games in Group I and Belgium are looking well placed to finish top of the group.  They have a 100% record coming into this match and sit in first place on 9 points.  Scotland find themselves in third place and are battling to qualify for the finals by finishing in the top two places.

Belgium come into this match having lost only one of their last nine games. That defeat was a heavy one away to Switzerland in the UEFA Nations League but since then Belgium have won three matches in a row.  They have defeated Russia and Kazakhstan at home plus Cyprus away.

Trends show the Red Devils have lost just two of their last thirty-four games, with the other defeat coming in the 2018 World Cup semi-final against France.

Belgium have not lost in their last seventeen home matches, winning thirteen and drawing four.  Seven of the last eleven have seen over 2.5 goals and Belgium have scored 2 or more goals in fifteen of their last seventeen on home soil.  The Belgian fans are used to being entertained and they will be wanting more of the same in this match.

Scotland have played three, won two and lost one in the qualifying group to date. The victories came against San Marino away and Cyprus at home but they suffered a poor defeat at the hands of Kazakhstan.  Not only did Scotland lose in Kazakhstan, they were humiliated 3-0 and the loss led to a change of manager.

The loss in Kazakhstan is their only defeat in their last four games but their overall recent record has been poor.  Scotland have lost eight of their last fourteen matches, with four of those defeats coming away from home.

Trends show Scotland have won five, drawn one and lost eight of their last fourteen away matches.  They have seen over 2.5 goals in three of their last four games on the road and have kept four clean sheets in their last fourteen.

Looking ahead to the team news and Belgium squad looks very strong.  Their attacking options for this game include Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne, Dries Mertens, Romelu Lukaku and Thorgan Hazard.

Scotland’s leading player is without doubt Liverpool full-back Andy Robertson.  However, it is difficult to imagine Robertson having much influence going forward and Scotland will need to be at their best defensively to get anything from the game.

Belgium will start this match as the clear favourites.  Scotland have not looked great in their previous group games and the home team will be hoping to score a few goals on their way to victory.
