Lille Aiming to Secure Second Place with Win

Despite the fact the Ligue 1 title is over for this season, with Paris Saint-Germain coming out on top, there is a fascinating race for second and third.

Only the top three in France qualify for the Champions League next season and two of the teams hoping to fill those spots, Lyon and Lille meet on Sunday night at the Groupama Stadium.

Lyon begin the weekend in third place, with 62 points to their name and that leaves them 3 points clear of the team in fourth. Lille are in second place on 68 points and know a win would all but seal them the runners-up spot this season.

Lyon gave their hopes of finishing in the top three a big boost with the 3-2 win at Bordeaux last weekend. They were 2-1 down in the second half but scored two goals, the third with 5 minutes remaining to seal the win.

Trends show Lyon are tough to beat at home and they have lost only three of their last twenty-four home Ligue 1 matches. They have won five of the last six on home soil including a 2-1 win over title winners Paris Saint-Germain.

Both teams have scored in each of Lyon’s last seven home Ligue 1 games and Lyon themselves have scored 2 or more goals in five of their last six at the Groupama Stadium.

Lille have enjoyed a great season and come into this match unbeaten in their last five league games. There have been wins over Nantes, Nimes and Paris Saint-Germain, with the 5-1 home success over the latter being their best result of the season.

Trends show they have lost only three of their last twenty-two Ligue 1 games and are unbeaten in each of their last ten on the road.  They have scored at least once in nine of their last ten away league matches but have seen under 2.5 goals in five of their last six.

Looking ahead to the team news and Lyon are without Amine Gouiri, Rafael and Marcal. Ferland Mendy should be available to start the match having come on from the bench last time out and Memphis Depay will play up-front.

Lille are with the suspended Thiago Mendes following an accumulation of yellow cards. Adama Soumaoro and Xeka are doubtful while Loic Remy is expected to continue in attack at the expense of Rafael Leao.

This is going to be a great game between two of the top teams in France. It would not be a surprise to see both teams find the back of the net in a draw and the 1-1 correct score should not be ruled out.
