With Valerenga under pressure in the lower reaches of the Eliteserien, the visit of Brann presents both opportunity and risk. While history has favored the hosts on their own turf, recent performances and key absentees ensure little can be taken for granted at Intility Arena.
Valerenga’s record at home against Brann has been imposing, claiming victory in seven of their last nine encounters and conceding defeat just twice. Particularly noteworthy is that the Oslo side have won 67% of their past six home fixtures against the visitors, underlining a trend of dominance when these sides meet in the capital.
The most recent duel, back in July in Bergen, saw Valerenga snatch a dramatic 3-2 win, defying Brann’s overwhelming 71% possession. Despite being pinned back for long spells, Valerenga’s efficiency in front of goal (12 shots on target from just 19 attempts) saw them secure all three points. These head-to-heads consistently run close, but Valerenga’s sharpness in attack has often made the difference.
Valerenga have struggled of late, both at home and overall. They have just one win in their last six games (1-2-3), averaging 1.83 goals scored but an alarming 2 conceded per match.
Home form has also been a concern: no wins in their last three at Intility (0-1-2), with 1.67 goals scored and 2.33 allowed, along with a significant dip in possession (45.33%). A deeper look reveals they’ve been winless in 80% of their last 10 across all competitions, and in nine of their last 11 league ties, losing 53% of their past 15 in the Eliteserien. While their attacking play, with nearly 16 shots per match and over 5 shots on target, remains a threat, defensive frailties persist.
Brann sit mid-table, but their recent six matches mirror Valerenga’s struggles, with two wins, one draw, and three defeats, scoring just 0.83 goals and conceding 1.33. However, their underlying stats are strong: an impressive 19 total shots per game, plus 5.5 on target, and control the midfield with a league-best 63.8% average possession. Away from home, Brann have avoided defeat in 88% of their last eight – a clear contrast to their hosts’ home woes.
Valerenga’s 13th-place standing (6-5-11, -10 goal difference) highlights ongoing issues at both ends of the park. They’ve scored a respectable 35 but shipped 45, with their run of just six league wins from 22 games putting them under increasing pressure with the season’s end approaching.
Brann, by contrast, are seventh (9-2-11), boasting a positive goal difference (+5) and 39 goals scored. Their losses remain high, but their away form has injected some necessary resilience.
For Valerenga, only half of their last 22 home matches have ended in victory, and they’ve lost five of their last 10 at Intility in the league. Brann’s away record is much steadier, taking points in 88% of their last eight on the road, and winning half of their last 16 league matches overall. Notably, Brann’s strength is controlling matches – they average over 60% ball possession in league contests, whether home or away.
Injuries and suspensions play a part in both camps. Valerenga will be without Omar Bully Drammeh (Achilles rupture) and Fidel Brice Ambina (injury). Brann are missing Nana Kwame Boakye (knee), Ulrik Mathisen (toe), and Kristall Máni Ingason (suspended).
Valerenga
Brann
Statistically, Valerenga’s home dominance versus Brann is a strong historical indicator, but recent slumps and a porous defense cast doubts. Brann’s league-high possession and resilience on the road suggest the visitors will see more of the ball, but their struggle for clinical finishing remains a concern.
Given Valerenga’s higher goal output, historic edge in Oslo, and Brann’s missing key creative and attacking players, it tilts the balance slightly towards the hosts. However, with Brann tough to break down away from home and Valerenga’s inconsistency, expect a tight battle.
Prediction: Valerenga to win (40% probability), with a likely score of 2-1 included in the assessment.
