Only a Win Will Do for Anderlecht

Only a Win Will Do for Anderlecht

With just one match remaining in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League, Club Brugge have sewn up the title and even a defeat for them would leave them at least 1 point clear at the top of the table.

However, Anderlecht are facing a struggle if they want to qualify for the Champions League next season.  They start their final game at home to Genk sitting in third place, 2 points off second place Standard Liege.

Only the top two in Belgium qualify for the Champions League so Anderlecht know they must win this match and hope Standard Liege slip up at Sporting Charleroi.

Anderlecht come into this match on the back of two disappointing defeats and it’s the losses at home to Standard Liege and Gent which have seen their title and Champions League hopes fade away this season.

Scoring goals has generally not been a problem for Anderlecht but they have struggled to keep clean sheets in recent games and trends show they have just one clean sheet in their last six Jupiler Pro League matches.

At home, Anderlecht have been tough to beat recently and have lost two of their last ten Jupiler Pro League matches at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium.  Interestingly, both teams have scored in six of their last eight home league games.

Genk make the trip to Brussels sitting fifth in the league table and need a win if they want to have any chance of qualifying for the Europa League.  Third and fourth place qualify for the Europa League and while Genk cannot catch Anderlecht in third, they are just 1 point behind fourth place Gent, who face a tricky match at league leaders Club Brugge.

Trends show Genk have lost just one of their last eight Jupiler Pro League matches but have found wins hard to come by during that run. Genk have picked up maximum points on only three occasions in those eight games and all of them have come on home soil.

Away from home in the league, Genk have won one of their last six matches and have failed to win any of their last four on the road.  There have been draws at Sporting Charleroi and Gent plus defeats at Club Brugge and Standard Liege, the latter of which was a heavy 5-0 loss.

Looking ahead to the team news and Anderlecht will be without top midfielder Leander Dendoncker who is suspended.  Dennis Appiah, Ivan Obradovic, and Lazar Markovic are all doubtful due to injury.

Genk also have a man suspended and midfielder Ruslan Malinovskiy will be forced to sit this one out.  Marcus Ingvartsen, Sander Berge and Bryan Heynen are on the treatment table and unlikely to take any part in the match.

Despite losing their last two matches, Anderlecht will fancy themselves to win against a team who recently suffered a heavy away defeat and have struggled to win games on the road.  However, we could see both teams score.
