Thanks to a 2-1 victory over Augsburg on Saturday, Bayer Leverkusen became the first team in Bundesliga history to complete an entire season without a loss.

Under the guidance of Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen claimed their first-ever top-flight title – finishing 17 points clear of second-placed VfB Stuttgart.

Bayern Munich dominated German football between 2012-13 and 2022-23, winning 11 consecutive Bundesliga titles. But Die Werkself have ended Die Roten’s reign in style.

So, how did Leverkusen remain unbeaten throughout the entire 2023-24 Bundesliga campaign? Join us as we take an in-depth look at the stats, trends and mathematics.

Alonso’s side registered 28 wins and six draws in 34 matches, taking 90 points from a possible 102, although they were unable to break Bayern’s record of 91 points from 2012-13.

Leverkusen scored 89 goals on their way to clinching the title, averaging 2.6 goals per game. Last season, they averaged 1.4 goals per game.

It is also worth noting that Bayer netted over 2.5 goals in exactly 50% of their matches, netting over 3.5 goals on seven occasions.

Remarkably, Leverkusen have scored 15 goals after the 90-minute mark across all competitions this season, underlining their never-say-die attitude.

At the opposite end of the pitch, the champions allowed just 24 goals in 34 league encounters, conceding at a rate of 0.7 goals per game.

Goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky kept 15 clean sheets in 33 appearances, giving him a shutout rate of 45.5%, with backup stopper Matej Kovar keeping another clean sheet.

Victor Boniface finished as the club’s top scorer in the Bundesliga, having bagged 14 goals and nine assists in 23 appearances.

21-year-old playmaker Florian Wirtz also starred throughout the campaign, notching 11 goals and 12 assists, while Alejandro Grimaldo registered 10 goals and 14 assists.

On top of that, Jeremie Frimpong contributed nine goals and nine assists, with Patrik Schick, Jonas Hofmann and Nathan Tella also chipping in with multiple attacking returns.

Still, huge credit must be given to the manager. Leverkusen were in a relegation battle when Alonso took over in October 2022. Now, they are invincible Bundesliga champions.

Die Werkself have the chance to complete an unbeaten campaign across all competitions in the coming days, with two finals on the horizon.

On Wednesday, Alonso’s men face Atalanta in the Europa League final in Dublin before taking on FC Kaiserslautern in the DFB-Pokal final on Saturday.

Having dominated the Bundesliga throughout 2023-24, Bayer Leverkusen will be confident of completing a historic unbeaten treble.
