How the Last 5 FA Cup Finals Have Gone for Manchester United?
560

With a record 20 league titles, Manchester United replay the FA Cup from last season with their city rivals and Premier League champions, Manchester City, as the Red Devils aim for their 13th FA Cup.

This will also put them within one of the record holders, Arsenal, and be United’s first FA Cup triumph since Louis van Gaal won the trophy in 2015/16

Manchester City vs Manchester United (2022/23)

The most recent FA Cup final is a carbon copy of this year’s as the two Manchester giants go at it again.

Last year, Ilkay Gundogan scored twice, including a finish in the first minute. Bruno Fernandes did get one back for United from the penalty spot, but City edged out a 2-1 win and ended up going on to snatch the Champions League a week later and match United’s 1998/98 feat by winning a Treble.

Chelsea vs Manchester United (2017/18)

A year where United managed to finish second in the Premier League, which remains their highest finish in the league since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

Jose Mourinho was also playing against his old side that day, as he ironically defeated United in an FA Cup final in 2007. In the end, an Eden Hazard penalty was the game’s only goal in a 1-0 win for United.

Manchester United vs Crystal Palace (2015/16)

United’s first FA Cup triumph since 2004 and the first major trophy in the post-Ferguson era. Van Gaal was the man who led the Red Devils to a 12th FA Cup, but was oddly sacked two days after the final to make way for Mourinho.

With this being the first FA Cup final win since 2004 for United, it was also the first and only one for Wayne Rooney in his career, who got the Man of the Match award. However, the game was won by a stunning finish from homegrown talent, Jesse Lingard, late in extra time, as Juan Mata equalised for United that day.

Van Gaal’s men won 2-1.

Chelsea vs Manchester United (2006/07)

Another FA Cup final where Chelsea and United battled, and another Wembley final where Didifer Drogba scored in a win for the Blues. Drogba scored in the 116th minute to steal the FA Cup just over a week after United won the title back from Mourinho's men.

Chelsea won 1-0.

Manchester United vs Millwall (2003/04)

An FA Cup final that is most notably remembered for the then soon-to-be five-time Ballon d’Or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo, scoring the opening goal in what was his debut season at United. Ruud van Nistelrooy also added two goals in the second half.

This final was also the fourth at the Millennium Stadium, due to the ongoing construction of Wembley Stadium. It was also the first final Millwall had reached in either the FA Cup or League Cup.

The game finished 3-0 to United.
