The new La Liga campaign couldn’t have begun in a more dramatic style.

With 89 minutes on the clock, 38-year-old substitute Aritz Aduriz scored a spectacular scissor kick to clinch victory for Athletic Bilbao against Barcelona.

As they nearly always do, Barcelona dominated the possession. The reigning champions registered 72% and completed more than twice as many passes as their opponent.

Ultimately, they couldn’t make their superiority count and Bilbao came away with a famous opening-day victory.

Saturday’s Round-Up

Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos and Lucas Vazquez all scored as Real Madrid cruised to a comfortable win over Celta Vigo.

Luka Modric was shown a red card just before the hour mark following a VAR referral and Iker Losada grabbed a late consolation for the hosts but the damage had already been done.

Last season’s Copa del Rey winners Valencia were held to a dramatic 1-1 draw by Real Socieded.

Kevin Gameiro scored and then missed a penalty before Mikel Oyarzabal’s 101st minute spot-kick snatched a draw for the visitors after Francis Coquelin was sent off for a handball.

Newly promoted Mallorca beat Eibar 2-1 at home while Osasuna also enjoyed a win against Leganes on their return to top-flight action.

There were eight different goal scorers as Villarreal drew 4-4 with Granada and the visitors came from behind four times two clinch a phenomenal draw.

Super Sunday

Alaves beat Levante 1-0 in the early kick-off before Sevilla clinched a comfortable 2-0 win away at Espanyol thanks to goals from Sergio Reguilon and Nolito.

Goalkeeper Joel Robles was sent off after just 8 minuets as Betis slipped to a 2-1 home defeat to Valladolid, Oscar Plano with the 89th minute winner for the visitors.

In the final match of the opening weekend, Alvaro Morata scored the only goal of the game as Atletico Madrid beat Getafe.

Both sides were shown first-half red cards, and despite Morata missing a penalty after half-time, Atletico held on the claim all three points.
