Friday Night Football

Lyon thrashed Monaco in the opening fixture with a totally convincing display.

Moussa Dembele opened the scoring after just 5 minutes before Cesc Fabregas was shown a red before half time.

Memphis Depay and Lucas Tousart completed the scoring for Lyon in a match that saw the team completely dominate the possession.

This is a worrying start from Monaco who only narrowly avoided relegation last season.

Saturday’s Round-up

Despite registering 65% possession and 10 shots, Marseille lost 2-0 to Stade Reims. Second-half goals from Boulaye Dia and Suk Hyun-jun secured a surprise opening-day victory for Reims.

There wasn’t much to separate Angers and Bordeaux last season as they finished 13th and 14th respectively. Angers got the upper hand this term with an outstanding 3-1 win.

Brest picked up an impressive point against Toulouse in their first top-flight match since 2013 while St-Etienne earned a hard-fought 2-1 win away at Dijon.

Rennes finished seven points behind Montpellier last season and began this term with a narrow but confidence-boosting 1-0 win.

Nice overcame Amiens after a dramatic battle. Amiens were reduced to ten men in the first half when Eddy Gnahore was sent off.

Nice took the lead five minutes later however Amiens leveled in the 81st minute. Dante then won the match for Nice in the fifth minute of injury time.

Super Sunday

Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen enjoyed a dream debut for Lille, as he helped his side to a 2-1 victory over Nantes with a brace.

Despite dominating against Metz, Strasbourg could only manage a draw after taking the lead through Adrien Thomasson in the first half.

In the final fixture of the weekend, PSG began the defense of their crown with a comprehensive 3-0 win against Nimes.

Goals from the frightening forward trio of Edinson Cavani, Kylian Mbappe and Angel Di Maria confirmed that PSG’s dominance of Ligue 1 looks set to continue.

Neymar was left out of the squad following the ongoing speculation over his future.
