The Premier League top scorer contest
The Barclays Premier League is in the home stretch and we have one of the most unexpected title races in years. Rather interesting are the names leading the Premier League Top Goal Scorers table.
Sergio Aguero, last year's winner currently sits in fourth postion with sixteen goals. No other players from last season's top three clubs are in realistic contention for the Golden Boot.
Leicester City's breakout star, Jamie Vardy tops the chart with nineteen goals in 2544 minutes of playing time, scoring a goal every for 134 minutes he has been on the pitch. His determination, passion and work rate make him a constant threat to opponents. He has electric pace which allows him to break through opposition back-lines and he gets more touches inside the opposition penalty area as a result. Vardy has a lethal eye for goal which has earned him an England call-up and a new contract with his club. The twenty-nine year-old striker has hit the target with 45 (57%) of his 79 shots on goal this season. Remarkable for a player who was plying his trade in the Conference Premier Division in 2011.
Harry Kane has also scored nineteen goals in the league this season. The Tottenham Hotspur striker is in second position because of his lower assist tally of one, three less than the Leicester player. Kane has more shots on goal than any other player (95), with 62% of those shots on target. The Twenty-two year-old Londoner has seen slightly more time on the pitch, scoring on average every 139 minutes. One of his strengths is the high level of energy he brings to his game, meaning he is always on the move and very tricky for opponents to mark. Kane came second to Aguero in last season's Golden Boot, scoring 21 by the end of the final game.
The third contender is Everton's powerful striker, Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian international possesses the physicality, pace and athleticism to intimidate even the very best defenders. He has added a creative vision to his game which makes him, at 22, the most complete young attackers in world football. Lukaku is only the fifth player to reach fifty goals in the league before reaching the age of Twenty-three. He has scored eighteen goals so far and has provided six assists for his teammates. With 38 (53%) of his 72 shots being on target this season, Lukaku scores an average of a goal every 135 minutes.
These three players will keep finding the back of the net. The question is who will finish the strongest? Vardy spectacularly broke Ruud Van Nistlerooy's record for scoring the most consecutive league goals. Kane is only two away from his goal tally of last year and will be determined to finish strong to help his team push on in the title race. Lukaku is in the best form of his career for Everton, always looking dangerous. His goals knocked Chelsea out of the FA cup at the weekend.
The Tottenham player's stats make him the man most likely as he has had the most time on the pitch, the most shots and the highest percentage of shots on target. Like the race for the title, this one's going right to the wire.
