Extending Cavani’s contract gives United one less headache

Extending Cavani’s contract gives United one less headache

On Monday, Manchester United handed a one-year contract extension to veteran Uruguayan forward Edinson Cavani.

He reportedly turned down an offer of a two-year deal with Argentinian outfit Boca Juniors to extend his stay in Manchester United.

The 34-year-old joined the Red Devils last summer on a free transfer after his contract with PSG expired. Despite initial concerns about his age, Cavani has gone on to become a roaring success for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team, scoring 15 goals in all competitions this season for United. That tally is without always starting games for United.

The forward signing a contract extension is a win-win for the men from Manchester. Cavani is a very useful forward asset, whose experience and know-how will only help the Red Devils younger forward players to develop and improve their finishing.

He has been one of the best finishers in the world game for over a decade. The ageing process has not taken little away from his ability to find the net. He has also lost known of his football intelligence.

If United went into the transfer market for a forward who would give the team a similar output, they would likely be laying out a fortune this summer.

However, the Red Devils have other positions that may be seen as a priority rather than having to spend big on a forward that may not always start games.

Securing a very good squad player for next season means that head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the people involved in recruitment at United can now concentrate on strengthening their squads’ weaker areas.

With this summer set to be another prudent one in football, clubs, even the size of United are unlikely to be spending like they were pre-COVID-19.

That means some clubs will need to make the most of the resources at their disposal. A player of the quality of Cavani is certainly not a bad resource to have available for United.
