Mainz started the new year well and have their chances to reach European football

Mainz started the new year well

After the short winter break in the German Bundesliga, Mainz showed some improvement and achieved good results, winning three of their four games for 2016. Mainz currently occupy the 6th position, but are just 2 points behind the 3rd place and Champions League football.

This Saturday Mainz face an away game to struggling Hoffenheim side, which haven’t won any of their last five league matches and are now 6 points off safety.  Furthermore, Hoffenheim won just one of all their home games this season, which is a rather poor record.

If Mainz make the most of this visit, they might just find themselves at the 3rd position, bearing in mind the other contenders for this spot have really tough games this round.

Mainz also have a decent away record this season and lost just 2 of their last 7 away games. They are a difficult opponent to overcome, while playing at home, as Schalke 04, Mönchengladbach, VfL Wolfsburg all lost their visits to The Coface Arena.

Should Mainz manage to keep solid at defence until the end of the season, they may find a place in an elite European football competition.
