Haaland on His Way to Breaking Records

Erling Braut Haaland first came to the attention of the majority of football fans during his time at Red Bull Salzburg. He joined the Austrian club from Molde, where he spent time as a teenager.

The Norwegian striker made his Molde debut on the 26th April 2017 in the Norwegian Cup against Volda TI and scored his first goal for the club. It was a sign of things to come.

Haaland made his League debut for Molde in June 2017 and came off the substitutes bench to score the winning goal. In 2018, he finished as Molde's top goalscorer with 16 goals in 30 matches in all competitions. That was enough to bring Haaland to the attention of Red Bull Salzburg and he made the move for a fee believed to be around €8 million.

Having joined the club in January, Haaland was soon on the goal scoring trail. In August of the same year, he scored his first Austrian Bundesliga hat-trick in a 5–2 win against Wolfsberger AC.

Following his third hat-trick for Red Bull Salzburg in a 7–2 victory over TSV Hartberg, Haaland scored yet another hat-trick, this time in the Champions League against Genk. He went on to score in each of his first three Champions League appearances, becoming only the second teenager in the history of the competition to complete the feat.

Haaland is the first teenager to score in his first four matches of the Champions League and only the 4th player overall. He then joined an illustrious list including Alessandro Del Piero, Serhiy Rebrov, Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Robert Lewandowski to score in five consecutive Champions League games.

It was little wonder some of the biggest clubs in European football were beginning to look at Haaland and he made the move to Borussia Dortmund in the January 2020 winter transfer window. The fee was believed to be in the region of €20 million and he scored a hat-trick within 23 minutes of his debut against Augsburg on the 18th of January. He became the first Bundesliga player to score 5 goals in his opening two matches and became the fastest player to reach that tally in the league.

Therefore, Haaland has already broken plenty of records in his career despite being only 20 years of age at the time of writing. That suggests there is plenty more to come, especially for the national team.

Following his hat-trick in Norway's 4–0 win against Romania in 2020/21 UEFA Nations League, Haaland has 6 goals in as many games for his country. The top goal scorer in the history of the Norwegian national team is Jørgen Juve, who netted 33 goals in 45 matches.

Haaland may not reach 33 goals in the same number of matches but it appears as though there is nothing stopping the striker from going on to set the record in terms of international goals for Norway.

Einar Gundersen is second on the list with 26 goals and Haaland should easily move beyond that total. Just how many goals Haaland scores for Norway will depend on the quality of players behind him in the team.
