David Silva will be a loss to the Premier League

On Sunday afternoon, Spanish midfielder David Silva played his final ever top-flight game for Manchester City, as the Citizens hammered Norwich 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

The veteran star spent ten silverware-laden years with the Manchester club, establishing himself as one of the greats of the Premier League era.

Silva has scored 77 goals and produced an incredible 140 assists, which is a record that few players have and will ever match the former Valencia star. He has been a key player in helping Manchester City becoming a real contender in both the Premier League and the Champions League. Although one player does not make a team, he has been a major influence in City’s rise.

Not only will Manchester City miss the Spanish playmaker, but so will the Premier League, as Silva has been a great player to watch as a neutral. The Citizens may have big pockets and a lot of quality already within their squad, Silva will be difficult to be replaced. City may hope that his exit does not have the same effect that Vincent Kompany’s departure had last summer. The Belgian’s exit has been cited as one of the biggest reasons for City’s poorer campaign in 2019/20 than the previous campaign.

Highly-rated young England starlet Phil Foden has been talked about as David Silva’s replacement. The 20-year-old is regarded as one of the best young midfielders in the European game. Foden has a big pair of boots to fill if he is indeed to be Silva’s replacement.

Silva’s time in the Premier League may have come to an end, but the Spanish playmaker still has the chance to sign off his Citizens career by winning the Champions League. Winning Europe’s elite competition would be a fitting tribute to Silva’s Manchester City career.
