Chelsea Targeting Wrong Players in Transfer Market?

Chelsea Targeting Wrong Players in Transfer Market?
4039

Thanks to the late finish of the 2019/20 Premier League season, some clubs have already agreed the transfer of players ahead of the next campaign. One of those teams is Chelsea and having been banned from buying players they now have access to the transfer market.

The Blues have been busy and have already completed two major deals ahead of next season.

Wide attacking player Hakim Ziyech has joined from Ajax in a deal worth €40 million. The Morocco international has impressed for the Dutch club over the past few seasons including their excellent Champions League campaign last season. At the age of 27, Ziyech will be entering the best years office career and is sure to be a hit going forward at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have also been in the market for a striker and have spent €53 million to bring in German international Timo Werner. The former RB Leipzig man was supposedly in big demand from several leading clubs around Europe and the Premier League including English champions Liverpool. However, it was Chelsea who stepped in first to make a formal offer and secure the deal to bring Werner to Stamford Bridge.

What these transfers mean for the likes of Willian, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud remains to be seen. At least one or two of these players could leave the club and at the time of writing Willian is yet to secure a new deal despite performing well towards the end of the current season.

There is no doubt the two players coming in are high quality but are they going to improve Chelsea where they need it most? Since the restart of the Premier League following coronavirus, Chelsea have had little trouble in terms of scoring goals but their main issue has been keeping them out of their own net.

The 3-2 defeat at West Ham United and 3-0 loss at Sheffield United highlight the problems Chelsea have been having at the back. Captain César Azpilicueta is arguably Chelsea’s best defender but the Spaniard has been employed in several defensive positions throughout the season and mostly at full back. Antonio Rüdiger, Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma are the three main central defenders and they have not inspired much confidence this season.

The left back position has also one that has come under scrutiny this season with Marcos Alonso, Emerson Palmieri and Azpilicueta all used in that position with mixed results. Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has also been unconvincing and there appears to be big problems at the back for Chelsea.

That begs the question, why have Chelsea spent money on the attack rather than the defence? Perhaps they have more money to spend and will move back into the transfer market with Ben Chilwell, Dayot Upamecano and Kalidou Koulibaly all linked to Stamford Bridge. Recent displays mean targeting a commanding central defender should be a priority with the addition of a left back also high on the agenda.

If Chelsea fail to strengthen their defence ahead of next season even the addition of Ziyech and Werner will not be enough to close the gap on Liverpool and Manchester City.
