Bundesliga return a relative success

Bundesliga return a relative success
2426

This weekend saw the Bundesliga return, as the first major European football league to restart during the COVID-19 pandemic. The world was watching, as the German top-flight produced a good weekend of football. Apart from a few minor breaches of rules here and there, the return was successful.

The return has seemingly divided football fans. Some were just glad to have football back, while others were discouraged by the fact there was no crowd, due to all the matches taking place behind closed doors.

It is a situation that football fans may have to become accustomed to, as most games for the rest of the year are likely to take place without fans. This is the new reality of watching football.

Granted the experience was an unusual one and one that may take some time to get used to. However, football behind closed doors is surely better than no football at all.

The quality of play on offer in the German top-flight was still top class. Dortmund, for example, produced an excellent display in a 4-0 win over arch-rivals Schalke in the Revierderby.

Norwegian wonderkid Erling Haaland once again displayed his predatory skills, while playmaker Julian Brandt produced a creative masterclass and wing-back Raphael Guerreiro scored a brace.

Elsewhere, reigning champions Bayern Munich restored their four-point lead at the top of the table with at a 2-0 win at Union Berlin. There was also a shock 3-0 away win at Hoffenheim for Hertha Berlin.

While it was not the usual football experience while watching German football, it was still football. It was some of the world’s best players playing the beautiful game that fans love. It may be some time till the famous roars of massive crowds in stadiums.

In the meantime, everybody will have to adapt to what is the new normal.
