German Bundesliga to Return

German Bundesliga to Return
3654

It is the news every football fan has been waiting for, one of the leading European leagues is about to return following the outbreak of the coronavirus. The German Bundesliga will resume on the 16th of May but there will be some changes to how the League was operating prior to the suspension of the competition.

The major change to the Bundesliga will be the number of fans attending matches. Every game will be played behind closed doors which means there will be no supporters in attendance at any of the remaining Bundesliga matches this season.

It will be interesting to see how the teams adapt to the lack of atmosphere inside the grounds. The Bundesliga is well known for the fans who always generate a fantastic atmosphere and this is something which will be missing from the remaining games.

How the players adjust to an empty stadium will be key in terms of their performance. You only have to look at the passionate crowd at Borussia Dortmund home games to see just how much the fans mean to the players. This applies for every team in the Bundesliga and those who are battling to avoid relegation will be extremely disappointed they will not have the backing of their own supporters at their home matches.

There has not been any suggestion of increasing the number of substitutes available to use by each team to five. This is an idea which is being discussed by the English Premier League but if the Premier League is to resume it is going to be at a much later date compared to the Bundesliga. Therefore, matches will be played at more regular intervals and having access to increased substitutions will help to keep players fresh as the season is completed.

The Bundesliga season will continue from match day 26 where it left off and the subsequent matchdays will follow in the order originally planned. Therefore, the Bundesliga is set to end on the 28th of June should everything go ahead without any problems.

However, while the Bundesliga 2 is also due to begin at the same time as the top division, this has been dealt a blow with the news two players tested positive for coronavirus at Dynamo Dresden. As a result, they have put their entire squad and coaching staff into two-week isolation and will miss their next two games. That will leave Dynamo Dresden with catching up to do if they are to finish their games by the scheduled date. In addition, their fixture having completed the two-week isolation is in midweek and this will leave them with little time to get together as a group and work on tactics.

Some would say this has already affected the integrity of the competition. What would happen if Bayern Munich were leading the Bundesliga by one point and one of their players tested positive for coronavirus? They would be forced to stop playing and put their squad and coaching staff into a two-week isolation. That means they would miss at least two matches and will be forced to catch up, possibly playing 6 games across a two week period.

Hopefully, everything goes according to plan and the Bundesliga can be completed without any issues. It is great to have a top European League back in action and it is sure to bring some much needed excitement for many people.
