UEFA Want Sporting Merit to Decide Leagues

UEFA Want Sporting Merit to Decide Leagues
    04/24/2020 1890

There have been many discussions over the last couple of months regarding how the European football leagues are going to finish this season. UEFA met again this week in a bid to try and find a solution which is suitable for all leagues plus qualification to the Champions League and Europa League for next season.

UEFA want every League in Europe to try their best to finish the current campaign and to explore all possible options to make this a reality. That does not necessarily mean the leagues have to be completed in full and there are alternative options available if required.

Considering the current lockdown measures in place in many countries such as The United Kingdom, Italy and France it remains very unlikely that the Premier League, Serie A and Ligue 1 are going to be able to finish the season normally.

UEFA were keen to stress they want the final League positions to be decided on sporting merit and nothing else. it is important to point out at this stage; these guidelines have only been issued for the top of the tables and do not relate to those who are involved in a relegation situation at the bottom of the table.

The Spanish Football Association have suggested final league placings being allocated on the basis of club coefficient. This calculates performance in European club competitions over a five year period and would mean Atletico Madrid qualify for the Champions League next season despite currently sitting outside the top four. This would be very unfair on Real Sociedad, who are currently sitting in a Champions League qualifying position. The same situation would occur in the English Premier League where Manchester United would qualify for the Champions League at the expense of Leicester City despite The Foxes occupying the qualifying spot.

If European leagues cannot find a way to finish all of their remaining matches this season, another proposal is to finish leagues with a different format. This could see a playoff system for example, where teams who are still currently in a position to qualify for the Champions League or Europa League next season will play each other to decide who enters the tournaments.

However, if a season is not finished for reasons that do not meet the guidelines set out by UEFA, they can reject the teams put forward by a national association. This could lead to an interesting situation as the Dutch Eredivisie have announced they unlikely to complete the current season because of government restrictions in the Netherlands. If that turns out to be the case for other countries such as England, France, Italy and Spain, does it mean that UEFA will stop Premier League, Ligue 1, Serie A and La Liga clubs from participating in the Champions League next season?

That seems very unlikely as the tournament relies on having the biggest clubs from around Europe in the competition. Sponsors are not going to take very kindly to seeing teams such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, Liverpool and Manchester City missing out.

It is clear there are still some very tough decisions to be made in terms of completing the season in Europe. There are going to be clubs and individuals who are happy and others who are left disappointed but surely an agreement has to be made which is universal.
