Coronavirus likely to affect Premier League transfers

Coronavirus likely to affect Premier League transfers
    04/22/2020 2689

The coronavirus is still keeping life globally in statis, as people remain inside houses in an attempt to prevent the spread of the virus. The virus has had a major effect on all the major football leagues in Europe and beyond.

One of those leagues is the Premier League. According to former Liverpool and Tottenham director of football Damien Comolli, there will be less big-money transfers made by English clubs in the next transfer window.

This is the harsh reality of most businesses around the world at this point, as football is a business at the end of the day. The coronavirus has and will have a devastating effect on football clubs’ finances.

Many of the biggest clubs in the Premier League are owned by billionaires, so they are not going to go bankrupt. However, further down the food chain, even further down the top-flight table clubs may be in major financial trouble.

That means that clubs will be less likely to be able to afford the sometimes-crazy transfers paid pre-COVID-19, as owners are unlikely to plough their own money into the clubs, as they are usually investments.

With less money available for big-money transfers, there is likely to be an increase in cheaper deals or loan deals. There has been much talk about football and the finance bubble bursting in recent years. It may be that the coronavirus is the thing that pricks the bubble.

Many believe that it will reset both transfer fees and players wages, with some clubs now having to tighten their financial belts in the months to come. The impact that the pandemic has on football could be unique.

It has shown that football clubs are often treading a thin line between riches and bankruptcy.

The coronavirus may change the face of football forever and in some ways, it may not be a terrible thing.
