Premier League cannot award Liverpool the title

The deadly COVID-19 pandemic has decimated the world football calendar. Every league around the world is looking for the best way forward in an unprecedented situation.

One of those leagues is the English top-flight. The Premier League is scheduled to return at the start of June. This is no doubt depending on how the virus develops and if the situation in the country improves.

The new tougher social distancing measures in the UK may well lead to a slowing down in the spread of the virus.

There are suggestions by some that the current Premier League campaign may not reach its conclusion, despite English football officials seeming determination to resume the 2019/20 campaign.

If it does not resume, then it creates a massive problem for the Premier League. They would then have to decide what to do with the title, European qualification spots and relegation. That would have a knock-on effect lower down the football pyramid.

It seems obvious to some that Liverpool should be crowned champions, without finishing the season.

The Reds are currently 25 points clear at the top of the table and coasting to their first top-flight title in 30 years. In fact, they need just two more wins to claim the English title. However, if that happened then there would forever be a shadow over the win.

Their title triumph is already going to be tainted due to the current circumstances. Awarding the Merseysider’s the title without playing out the remainder of the games would almost be an insult to the hard work of everybody connected with the club.

Of course, awarding the Reds the title without playing the remaining games would be better than voiding the whole season. However, if it is to be done properly at least Liverpool can take the joy ending their title wait, even in difficulty circumstances.
