UEFA seemingly making the right decisions in an uncertain climate

On Tuesday UEFA held a video conference meeting with the big wigs of the European game to decide many issues due to the endemic Coronavirus. Chief amongst them was what to do about Euro 2020 and the resumption of domestic leagues.

The international tournament was due to take place this summer and be played over 12 different countries with the final to be held at Wembley.

The decision was to push it back a year until 2021 seems logical. It was the obvious move and the right one considering the uncertain climate with the virus seemingly affecting most of the participating countries. Pushing back the international tournament will allow time for all the major European leagues to finish their campaigns.

UEFA have stated that they believe all domestic leagues can be completed by June 30th. That is the hope, although these things are hard to predict as the situation with the virus has become very unpredictable.

Some countries are in lockdown, while there are suggestions that England may well start to take further measures shortly. Those further measures include potential school closures, which would impact the whole country.

The priority in the current crisis is the preservation of life and individual’s health. In a football sense though, the return of domestic football soon is a much-needed one.

Football fans all over the world have had to find alternative entertainment, which although innovative has become bizarre in some instances.

Most clubs have been in favour of finishing their domestic campaigns, as suspension could have potentially devastating effects on smaller clubs. Whether the domestic leagues will be played out behind closed doors is yet unknown.

UEFA has come in for criticism in the past for their decisions. However, in this case, they seem to be doing the right thing in difficult circumstances.
