The appointment of head coach Jose Mourinho at Tottenham as the replacement for Argentinian boss Mauricio Pochettino looked to be something of a coup by the north London club.

Mourinho is one of the most successful coaches of the modern era of football. He has won every trophy there is to win in the club game. Tottenham needed a boss with trophy-winning experience, as they have struggled for silverware in recent years.

It all started so well for the Portuguese boss in the English capital, as he helped the team to wins in four of his first five Premier League matches in charge. Spurs surged up the table and looked set to challenge for a top-four spot once again.

However, it seems the wheels have fallen off the Mourinho bandwagon at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium of late. Spurs have now won just once in their last five league matches, including worrying for everybody associated with the club suffering three defeats in their last five league outings.

The poor recent run of form has seen the north London club slip nine points behind the teams in the Champions League spots when a few weeks ago they were within touching distance once again.

The current run of form seems to be reminiscent of the dying days of Pochettino’s reign at the north London club. Granted Tottenham do have injury problems with the likes of Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Kane sidelined recently.

However, they should have had enough quality to see off the likes of Norwich and Southampton, albeit the Saints have enjoyed a revival of late in the top-flight.

Mourinho is unlikely to admit that he is concerned about the situation, but looking at the table, it seems that the team from north London look highly unlikely to make those lucrative Champions League spots this season.

If they do not then Mourinho will have a major job on his hands restoring Spurs to the top-four in the near future.
