Exciting Race for Top Four in Prospect

Exciting Race for Top Four in Prospect
2609

The race for the Premier League title appears to be over as Liverpool have a massive lead at the top of the table. Anything can happen in football but it will take a dramatic collapse from Jurgen Klopp’s team should they fail this season.

However, the race to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League next season is still very much alive. As things stand, Leicester City and Manchester City should finish in 2nd and 3rd place although it has yet to be determined which team will finish in which position. That leaves 4th place up for grabs and there are several teams who will have eyes on finishing in 4th this season.

At the time of writing, Chelsea occupy 4th place in the Premier League and they are 5 points clear of 5th place Manchester United. Chelsea's form in the Premier League since November has been very inconsistent and between the 23rd of November and 1st of January Chelsea have won only 4 of their 9 Premier League matches. There have been defeats against Manchester City, West Ham United, Everton, Bournemouth and Southampton. In all but the game against Manchester City, Chelsea started the match as favourites but ultimately lost the game.

The disappointing results for Chelsea will give hope to the teams behind them but can they find a good run of results to close the gap on The Blues?

Manchester United have won only 2 of their last 5 Premier League games ahead of the meeting with Norwich City on the 11th of January. It appeared as though the Red Devils had found some form in the Premier League but disappointing displays at Watford and Arsenal have put their top four credentials in doubt.

Upcoming matches against Liverpool, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea will have a big say whether Manchester United can finish 4th this season.

Tottenham Hotspur have made a managerial change this season but there has not been any sign of an improvement in results or performances. Jose Mourinho has a big task on his hands to close the 6 point gap on Chelsea but if they can string a run of wins together in the Premier League it is possible, they can close the gap. However, the injury to Harry Kane leaves them short of options up-front and it will be interesting to see how they cope without the English striker.

Is it possible we could see someone from outside the ‘top six’ clubs finish in the top four this season? Wolverhampton Wanderers are currently level on points with Tottenham Hotspur, leaving them 6 points adrift of 4th place. They have the Europa League to contend with when it returns in February but there is no doubt Wolves have the ability to make a push for 4th place this season.

Arsenal are currently 9 points off 4th place in the Premier League but recent victories under new manager Mikel Arteta have been promising. The Gunners face Crystal Palace, Sheffield United and Chelsea in their next three Premier League games and if they can win each of those matches Arsenal could easily become a contender for 4th place.
