Following their 2-1 home victory against Genk in the Champions League on Tuesday night, Liverpool have lost only one of their 17 matches in all competitions this season. The single defeat came at Napoli in the Champions League but it does not appear the negative result will damage their chances of progressing to the knockout stages.

Following the 2-0 defeat in Naples, Liverpool have embarked on a run of 11 games without defeat. The Reds have drawn two of those matches, one of which was at Old Trafford against Manchester United in the Premier League and the other was at home against Arsenal in the League Cup.

The latter went to a penalty shootout which Liverpool won to remain in the competition.

However, despite remaining undefeated in domestic competitions this season, recent results have not been very convincing.

Trend show Liverpool have failed to win any of their last six Premier League games by more than a single goal. It appeared as though they were about to taste their first Premier League defeat of the season at Aston Villa last weekend but 2 late goals saw them come through to claim victory. It is always a good sign for a team chasing the league title when they have the ability to score goals late in matches.

Nonetheless, Liverpool have not been dominating games in the Premier League in recent weeks and this must be a slight concern ahead of the meeting with defending champions, Manchester City. Jurgen Klopp made changes to his team for the home Champions League match with Genk on Tuesday night but again, Liverpool fail to put the game beyond doubt and won the match by a single goal.

Liverpool fans wouldn't care if their team won by a single goal for the remainder of the season if it meant the team lifted the Premier League trophy come the end of the campaign. However, it is not always going to be possible to produce the kind of finish they did at Aston Villa last weekend in the Premier League. Liverpool have won only one of their last 9 matches in all competitions by more than a single goal and that was a 4-1 win in Genk a few weeks ago.

The main issue seems to be the defence and Liverpool have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last 8 matches in all competitions. Can Liverpool continue to win games if they are unable to keep a clean sheet and will the narrow victories begin turning into draws and possibly defeats?

With a very busy period of fixtures coming up over the next 2 months, it will be interesting to see if results change and what the impact will be for the remainder of Liverpool’s season.
