Robert Lewandowski deserves more acclaim

Robert Lewandowski deserves more acclaim

In the last decade, the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have dominated the European game, racking up unbelievable goalscoring numbers every season.

Yet, neither are really out and out centre-forwards in the old-fashioned sense. Ronaldo has moved into a more central position in recent seasons, while Messi has a license to roam for Barcelona.

However, there is a striker who has remained frighteningly consistent in front of goal in that time. His name is Robert Lewandowski.

While any European football fan worth his salt will know the Polish striker, he is often overlooked when it comes to great goalscorers. However, the 31-year-old has been simply outstanding in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

He is in his tenth season in the German top-flight, having made his debut with Dortmund, and more recently starred for Bayern Munich. Only once in the last nine years has he failed to hit 20 goals in a Bundesliga season. Even that season, he scored 17 times in the German top-flight.

This season he has scored in all eight club games he has played in for Bayern, wracking up a total of 13 goals already for the Bavarians. Last time out, he scored a brace and played a crucial role in his team recording an astounding 7-2 victory at Premier League Tottenham.

With the game on a knife-edge at 1-1, he swivelled and smashed home a goal that completely changed the game. The effort turned the match Bayern’s way and they ran amuck at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Obviously, it is not Lewandowski’s first vital goal. The experienced striker has been scoring vital goals throughout his career in the German top-flight.

Lewandowski will go down as one of the best penalty area predators the Bundesliga have ever seen. However, maybe he deserves more acclaim and more attention than he receives from the wider world.
