Mourinho the Right Choice for Newcastle?

Mourinho the Right Choice for Newcastle?
2994

The longer the contract discussions went on without a positive outcome, there was always a bigger chance Rafa Benitez was going to leave his role as manager of Newcastle United.

It has now officially been announced he will leave the club on 30th June.  The Spaniard lead Newcastle United to a 13th place finish last season but has not had the financial backing he desired to take the club to the next level.

The training infrastructure was something else it is believed Benitez wanted to have improved.  There were moments during the season when Benitez did not get his way.  The proposed transfer of Andros Townsend is a good example.

There were many issues which have led to Benitez leaving the club but now it is time for Newcastle United to look forward. They begin the new Premier League season on the 11th August and need a manager in place with plenty of time to work with the players during pre-season.  A delay in the appointment could prove very costly, with a place in the Premier League on the line.

Therefore, it would make sense to appoint a man who is already available to take the position.  Someone who is experienced in the Premier League but is not currently in employment.  One man seems to fit the bill nicely and his name is Jose Mourinho.

Having been sacked by Manchester United, the Portuguese has been working mainly as an analyst on television.  He seems to have enjoyed his time away from management but would surely like to return, especially in the Premier League.

Speaking about Newcastle United last summer, Mourinho said, “I like to go there. I like the feeling of going to Mr Robson’s home,” before continuing, “I like that feeling. I like the stadium. I like the atmosphere. They are a good, enthusiastic crowd. I like the Geordies.”

Bobby Robson is seen by Mourinho as his mentor during his early years at Barcelona, Porto and Sporting Lisbon and this may have some sway on his decision.

However, while Mourinho may be suited to the task at hand at Newcastle United, the former Chelsea boss has always had problems when things have not gone his way.  Whether it be the transfer market or a current player, Mourinho is not afraid to speak his mind if he does not get what he wants.

That could put him on a collision course with owner, Mike Ashley.  Mourinho has never spent more than 4 years at club, with his shortest spell in the Premier League being his most recent at Manchester United.

Mourinho no doubt has the tactical knowhow to keep Newcastle United in the Premier League.  It may not always be pretty to watch on the pitch but it will get the job done.  The main issues could come off the pitch and that’s why the appointment of Mourinho should be considered a big risk for Newcastle United.
