Conte the Man for Inter?
2204
The media appear confident Inter Milan are going to name Antonio Conte as their new manager following the end of the current campaign. The Nerazzurri are hoping to qualify for the Champions League with a win over Empoli on the final day of the season and that could be the last game in charge for Luciano Spalletti.
The deal to bring in Conte is not thought to hinge on qualification to the Champions League but it would be a big boost if Inter can finish inside the top four.
Conte has been out of management since his sacking at Chelsea two years ago. He won the Premier League title in his first season at Stamford Bridge and the FA Cup during his second campaign. However, it was during the second season at the club when things started to unravel for Conte. The infamous text message to Diego Costa telling him he was no longer needed at the club being one of the primary examples.
Having won three titles with Juventus, Conte spent two years with the Italian national team. He has plenty of experience in Italian, English and international football despite being out of the game for two years.
One major stumbling block to the deal for Inter could be the vacant managerial post at Conte’s former club, Juventus. The Old Lady have announced they no longer require the services of Max Allegri and are actively seeking a replacement. Pep Guardiola has been mentioned but Conte would be a more realistic target.
Maurizio Sarri and Jose Mourinho have also been mentioned, so there is no shortage of big names being linked with the Juventus job. In addition, now Allegri has become available, will Inter Milan make a last minute switch and attempt to bring in the former Juventus boss?
The rumours have been strong about Conte and Inter for some time, so it appears the former Chelsea man is still in pole position. So much so that the media have been speculating on the players Conte would like to bring into the club.
Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku has been heavily linked with a move to the San Siro. The former Everton striker has spoken about his desire to play in Italy one day and could become the perfect foil for Mauro Icardi.
Another player linked with a move to Inter Milan is Victor Moses. The Nigerian international enjoyed a successful time under Conte at Chelsea as a right-wing back and would be tempted by a move to Serie A from Fenerbahce in Turkey.
It is believed Uruguay international defender; Diego Godin is going to join on a free transfer from Atletico Madrid and could form a fearsome back three alongside Milan Skriniar and Stefan de Vrij. There is no doubt Conte would provide Inter Milan with a clear identity next season but will the players respond to his style and training sessions?
Following the Icardi saga this season, the club cannot afford another fallout so it will be interesting to see how Conte goes about his business if appointed.
