Is Dortmund’s season collapsing?
On Tuesday night, Dortmund suffered a 1-0 home defeat against Tottenham in the last 16 of the Champions League. The defeat means that BVB suffered a 4-0 aggregate defeat against the English side.
The defeat was just another worrying sign that the German’s sides season is collapsing around them. Lucien Favre’s team have now won just one of their last eight matches in all competitions.
The poor run of form is certainly a worrying one for a team that looked so assured earlier in the season when seemingly racing away with the Bundesliga title, while playing some sumptuous football in the process.
In a strange way, BVB’s Champions League exit may well help Favre’s team focus on maintaining their lead at the top of the Bundesliga table. A run of one win in their last five league games has seen Dortmund throw away a healthy lead at the top of the table.
Reigning champions Bayern Munich have hit a strong run of form of late and BVB are now only ahead of the Bavarians courtesy of a superior goal difference of two goals.
Dortmund also started last season on fire, only to suffer a dramatic loss of form and only scrape into the Bundesliga top four on the final day of the season.
However, Favre is an experienced boss and will be confident of turning things around. The team has a number of quality players, as the first three-quarters of the season proved. They are now under immense pressure from Bayern, who have dominated the German top-flight in recent years.
Now is the time for the players and their experienced boss to show that they are capable of becoming German champions. Dortmund’s collapse may have made the Bundesliga title race more interesting, but it will certainly not be doing their fans blood pressure much good that is for sure.
