Huge Week for Spurs

Top European club teams often complain about the international break and for Tottenham Hotspur, they will be very disappointed to see their players leave to join their country.

Having endured a tough week with the draw at PSV and the 1-0 loss at home to Manchester City, Spurs have come back well.  Mauricio Pochettino’s team have won each of their four games following the loss against Manchester City.

There have been two wins in the Premier League, one in the League Cup and one in the Champions League.

Perhaps the most impressive of the four wins have come in the Premier League.  Spurs have travelled to two tough venues and came away with maximum points.  The first was a 3-2 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers, who are proving to be more than a match for the big clubs this season.  The second was a hard fought 1-0 win at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Those wins plus the victory over West Ham United in the League Cup and PSV in the Champions League mean Spurs continue to fight on four fronts this season.

However, the club have three huge games coming up following the international break and they could easily make or break their season.

As things stand in the Premier League, Spurs are 5 points off the leaders, Manchester City.  They are 3 points behind second place Liverpool and 1 point behind third place Chelsea.  The first fixture back after the international break is at home against Chelsea.

This is a massive game and Spurs know a win would guarantee them third place.  Pochettino’s team then host Inter Milan in the Champions League at Wembley and only a win will do if they want to head to Spain in the final round of games with a chance to qualify.

Then comes the match the fans have been waiting for, the north London derby against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.  A win from that match would give the fans genuine belief they can challenge for the title again this season.

In truth, it is unlikely Spurs are going to win the Champions League and they are up against it with the match in Barcelona as their final game. However, despite the seeming dominance of Manchester City in the Premier League, wins over Chelsea and Arsenal would give Spurs the confidence they could challenge and cause an upset in the title race this season.

Both Manchester City and Liverpool will be hoping to go far in the Champions League this season, with the former well placed to do so but Spurs may be left to focus on the Premier League.

However, Spurs must make a statement by winning the upcoming matches against Chelsea and Arsenal.  If they can do that and remain close to Manchester City heading into December and the New Year, the fixtures become a bit kinder for Spurs with games against Southampton, Leicester City, Burnley, Everton, Bournemouth, Wolves and Cardiff City.

Spurs have a huge week approaching in their season and it could be make or break as far as their Premier League title and Champions League hopes are concerned.
