Argentina’s problems there for all to see at World Cup 2018

Argentina exited the World Cup at the last 16 stage on Saturday after a 4-3 defeat against France. La Albiceleste headed into the tournament with many concerns over the team.

The concerns about their defensive problems were confirmed in a 3-0 defeat against Croatia in the group stage, and of course yesterday’s clash with Les Bleus.

The South American giants also went into the competition with three highly inexperienced goalkeepers at international level. The two that appeared at Russia 2018 Willy Caballero and Franco Armani could be held responsible for crucial goals scored against their team.

Most top teams have a good foundation of a reliable goalkeeper, which Argentina do not at the minute. Some may say that first-choice Sergio Romero had to pull out of the competition at the last minute, but the Manchester United stopper had barely featured for the Red Devils last season.

La Albiceleste’s weak defence was always going to be a problem. At club level, Nicolas Otamendi enjoyed a great season with Manchester City, but at the World Cup, he has struggled to marshal a defence made up of the likes of Marcos Rojo, Nicolas Tagliafico and Gabriel Mercado, who have failed to cover themselves in glory.

The South American giants have also lacked creativity for much of Russia 2018. While star Lionel Messi attempted to do everything, the midfield was weak for much of the competition. Messi seems to be the scapegoat for a poor Argentinian World Cup.

Argentina boss Jorge Sampaoli has also made some poor tactical decisions and selections. One glaring error seems to be leaving prolific Inter forward Marco Icardi at home and keeping Juventus star Paolo Dybala on the bench for the majority of the tournament.

There is likely to be significant changes in the playing personnel after the failure in Russia. The future of Sampaoli as Argentina boss is now also in major question.

Overall, Argentina have endured a tournament to forget, and Messi now seems set to end his career having failed to win the biggest competition in international football.
