    Tottenham’s most important Summer signing

With the news that Mauricio Pochettino has put pen to paper on a new five year deal at Tottenham, there is cause for optimism in North London this Summer. The former Southampton boss offered something of an ultimatum after the final game of the Premier League season, one that looks like it has been answered.

Pochettino intimated quite publicly that if he was not given the financial backing required to push the club onto the next level then he would have to depart in the off season and leave the job up to a new incumbent.

And although the funds have not materialised just yet, the fact that both Pochettino and Daniel Levy have agreed on such a sizeable new contract means that the man who once plied his trade for Paris Saint-Germain will seemingly get what he wants in the off season.

With Tottenham bracing themselves for the departures of players such as Toby Alderweireld, Danny Rose and Mousa Dembele money was always going to have to be spent even if they wanted to try and sustain their current top four achievements.

But with the comments that Pochettino made it is obvious that he is not prepared to settle for just earning a place in the Champions League each season. Now it is a watershed moment for the club that are preparing to move into their new stadium.

And what better time to make a statement of intent, this Summer could well be the season where Tottenham not just build a squad capable of challenging for a place in the top four but actually going on to win the title.

It is reported that somewhere in the region of £100m has been promised in the way of transfer funds, and this is a figure before the sales of the three players mentioned above have been factored in.

This means there could be somewhere in the region of £150m to £200m for Pochettino to spend as he looks to take this Tottenham squad to the next level. Not only that but the fact that he has committed to the club means a whole host of his players are set to as well.

Players such as Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane have made it clear that their futures are linked to that of the current Tottenham managers and with them also set to put pen to paper on a new deal it means that the predicted mass exodus will be warded off for the foreseeable future.

Being given money to spend is not necessarily a guarantee for success, ultimately that money must be spent wisely. Something that Pochettino has done since taking over as Tottenham manager, although perhaps also out of necessity.

But with the prospect of now being able to purchase players at a higher price point then the club have done previously it does make for exciting times. Tottenham have arguably punched above their weight over the past few years but now they could truly become one of the heavyweights.
