2017/18 Premier League Preview West Bromwich Albion

2017/18 Premier League Preview West Bromwich Albion

West Bromwich Albion finished in the top half of the Premier League table for only the second time in their history last season. The only other time they have finished higher in the Premier League was back in 2012/13 when they finished in 8th place.

Prior to November last season, West Brom were struggling towards the bottom of the table and threat of relegation was a real possibility.  However, a great run of 9 wins from 16 games between November and February lifted West Brom up the Premier League table and to safety.

Between the 31st December and the 16th May, West Brom were in 8th place in the Premier League and only dropped two places thanks to defeats at Manchester City and Swansea City in their final two games of the season.

West Brom failed to win any of their final nine games of the 2016/17 Premier League season and will want to hit the ground running this season.  Can Tony Pulis ensure another top half finish for West Brom this season?

With Pulis in charge of the club, West Brom are not going to get relegated this season.  The Welshman has a great record of establishing teams in the Premier League and while his football may not always be good to the eye, his teams have always been difficult to beat.

West Brom are 6/1 to be relegated from the Premier League and that sounds about right.

The question is where can they go from 10th place?

Pulis has tried to strengthen the team in attacking areas during the summer transfer window and has brought in Jay Rodriguez from Southampton for £12 million and Yuning Zhang from Vitesse for £6.5 million.

However, Salomon Rondon will be the main man in West Brom’s attack this season.  The Venezuelan striker has finished as West Brom’s top goal scorer in the past two seasons, despite never reaching the 10-goal mark.  Rondon is 100/1 to be the top goal scorer in the 2017/18 Premier League and 7/5 to be West Brom’s top goal scorer, with the latter clearly being the more likely of the two outcomes.

If West Brom are to make strides in the top half of the table they will need to score more goals.  Only Southampton of the top 12 teams scored less goals than West Brom last season.

With Everton facing a potential Europa League campaign, Southampton with a new manager and Bournemouth unlikely to finish any higher than last season, West Brom will be looking at moving above these teams in the Premier League this season.

West Brom are 10/11 to finish above Bournemouth and 9/4 to finish above Southampton this season.  However, a top six place is still some way off for the Baggies.  They are very unlikely to match any of last season’s top six and this is reflected in the odds of 33/1 for them to overhaul the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal at the top end of the table.

Another top ten finish would be welcome at the Hawthorns this season but the first thing in the mind of the manager will be to simply remain in the Premier League and West Brom are 1/7 to do just that.
