Pep Guardiola’s first season in charge at Manchester City ended in disappointment and he will be expected to produce a better result come the end of the 2017/18 Premier League campaign.

Having started the season well, winning his first 10 games, it looked like business as usual for Guardiola who was used to winning trophies.  However, a bad run in October and the business surrounding the departure of Joe Hart saw Manchester City slip out of the title race.

Having dropped to third in week 26 season of the season Manchester City failed to recover and just two wins in eight games between 8th March and 30th April ended any hopes of finishing top of the table.

What does the 2017/18 Premier League season hold for Manchester City?

If the bookmakers are to be believed, Manchester City will in the Premier League this season as they are the favourites priced at 9/5.

Guardiola has strengthened the team massively during the summer transfer window.  Perhaps the toughest position to play in a Guardiola system is full-back and that’s why the club have not been afraid to splash the cash on this area of the team.

Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy and Danilo have been brought in at a combined to total of over £115 million which is a staggering amount for that area of the team.  A new goalkeeper has been brought in at great expense and it will be interesting to see how Ederson performs at the start of the season.

Midfielder Bernardo Silva has been the other notable addition and the Portuguese will bring plenty of creativity going forward. The fitness of Vincent Kompany will be huge this season and the Belgian needs to stay fit if Manchester City are to challenge at the top of the table.

The interesting point will be if results do not go Manchester City’s way at the start of the campaign.  Guardiola is under huge pressure to deliver trophies this season and if things start going wrong, the owners will not be afraid to act.  Jose Mourinho’s sacking at Chelsea shows anything can happen and Guardiola is 50/1 to be the first manager to leave a Premier League club this season.

In Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus, Manchester City have two fantastic South American strikers.  If both can perform to the level they are capable of and remain fit they will score goals.  Aguero is 7/1 and Jesus 9/1 to finish top scorer in the Premier League this season.

Add the strikers to David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane and Bernardo Silva and you have a formidable attacking threat.  Manchester City are 7/5 to finish as top goal scorers in the 2017/18 Premier League.

There is no doubt Manchester City have a fantastic squad of players.  There are still question marks over the goalkeeper but a couple of solid performances at the start of the season will cast away those doubts.  You must go back to the 2003/04 season to find the last time a team went unbeaten in the Premier League and Manchester City are 60/1 to do it this season.
