Having finished 4th in the Premier League last season, Liverpool will return to action for the 2017/18 campaign hoping to move further up the table and challenge for the title.

Last season was Jurgen Klopp’s first full season in charge at Anfield and in many ways, the first two fixtures of the season summed up the whole campaign for Liverpool.  The Reds defeated Arsenal away 4-3 only to then lose at Burnley 2-0.

Despite that setback, Liverpool moved to the top of the Premier League table following a 6-1 victory over Watford at Anfield but could not sustain that form throughout the season.  There were disappointing defeats to Bournemouth, Swansea, Hull, Leicester and Crystal Palace.

Can Liverpool remain consistent and win the 2017/18 Premier League title?

Klopp has added Mohamed Salah to his squad for this season, which adds more pace to Liverpool’s attacking play.  However, it is elsewhere in the team where additions are required and to date these have not arrived.

Both midfielder Naby Keita of RB Leipzig and Virgil van Dijk of Southampton are yet to join the club, despite being heavily linked with moves.  The move for the latter proved very embarrassing for the club and Liverpool were forced to abandon the transfer but may make a return before the transfer deadline.

Virgil van Dijk is 10/11 to move to Liverpool by the close of this transfer window and 7/2 to stay at Southampton.

With Neymar moving to PSG, Liverpool may also have a fight on their hands to keep Philippe Coutinho at the club. The Brazilian has been strongly linked with a move to the Camp Nou and Barcelona have big money to spend.  The loss of Coutinho would be a huge blow and he is 10/11 to join Barcelona.

With Champions League football to contend with, if Liverpool qualify for the group stages, this could be a tough season in the Premier League without the necessary reinforcements in defence and midfield.  Liverpool are 12/1 to win the Premier League and currently that seems about right.

While the bookmakers seem certain Liverpool will finish in the top six this season at 2/9, Everton are waiting for one team to falter so they can make their move and that team could be Liverpool.  Looking at the defence, it is difficult to make a case for any of Liverpool’s players to get into the team of their rivals at the top this season.  Liverpool at 10/11 not to finish in the top 4.

Liverpool are a team who like to spread the goals around the forward players so although Roberto Firmino is likely to play centrally, he may not get the goals of other strikers in the Premier League.  Firmino is 50/1 to be the Premier League top scorer, which reflects this theory.

The bookmakers are even undecided on who will finish top scorer at Liverpool this season.  Sadio Mane is 11/4, Roberto Firmino is 13/5, Philippe Coutinho is 4/1, Mohamed Salah is 5/1 and Daniel Sturridge is 6/1.
